The author discusses the historical retrospective of research on the phenomenon of “subculture” as a “new” type of intercultural communication barriers in the dyads “culture - subcultural education”. This study touches on the linguistic aspect of the concept, the evolution of attitudes towards subcultures in the scientific community, as well as important components of the theoretical basis of subcultural studies, for example, the “societal society” of Parsons or the “symbolic interactionism” of Mead and Blumer. The historiography of problem studies in this work covers the period in foreign studies from the early Chicago School of Sociology to the views of our contemporaries from the Birmingham School. The author considered research by the Russian humanitarian scientists of the “subculture” phenomenon from the 1980s (the period when the official ideology of the Soviet Union recognized the existence of subcultural entities) until the modern academic discourse. The study presents the author's typology of approaches to the phenomenon of “subculture”.
