Many countries around the world, including Russia, will continue to depend on oil production to meet their basic energy needs for many decades to come. Measuring multiphase flows is a fundamental metrological task in hydrocarbon production today. However, field measurements are characterised by high accuracy errors, which cost the industry billions of pounds in financial risks and production losses. It is clear that the oil and gas industry is becoming increasingly dependent on multiphase metrology as part of the engineering that enables new fields to be exploited at lower cost. In this context, there is a clear need to develop and improve methods and approaches to metrological measurements in order to obtain accurate and reliable results at the lowest possible cost. Taking into account the above, this article reviews the experience of Russian oil production companies in optimising metrological support processes for oil production.
