Semantics of the dragon: philosophical and linguistic interpretation (based on the materials of oracle bone inscriptions)

In the article we have made an attempt to systematize different inscriptions of “long” (dragon) on the oracle bones and tortoise shells. Dragon is one of the main symbols of China, the character of various myths, ancient classical texts and novels. The semantics of Chinese dragon have been changed over thousands of years. Due to the fact that interpretations of its origin and functions are contradictory, it seems appropriate to analyse this symbol from the standpoint of historical development. Basing on oracle inscriptions we have presented the main concepts of Chinese researchers on origin of the Dragon symbol. Philosophical and linguistic interpretation of the Dragon symbol would contribute to a better understanding of the processes taking place in China, such as formation and development of nationhood, culture and literature.
