The authors consider the actual problem of philosophical and methodological bases of development of higher school students' professional competences typical for a self-creating personality in the framework of psychology and social sciences. The article analyses the foundation of the humanistic psychology of Viktor Frankl, as well as the classic texts dealing with the problems of harmoniously developed (on the basis of Plato's musical (mousikë) education) and reasonable (virtuous) individual. The sociological survey has identified the key features of a modern teacher, which students consider to be essential. Based on the students' opinions, the authors draw general conclusions concerning the possibility of combining the ideals of humanistic psychology of self-creating personality development, musical education, and an actual image of a teacher in the XXI century.
