The article deals with the preconditions which led to the emergence of a set of professional ethical norms for physicians. Linkages between the formulation of the codes and establishment of the medical profession are traced. Key ethical standards for the codes were promulgated and published by physicians-practitioners. General and specific traits of this process in Russia and Europe are outlined.
