The article is devoted to the actual problem of formation of lexical competence as one of the essential communicative abilities. The article attempts to reveal the ways of forming lexical competence in the process of studying the linguistic and stylistic features of artistic descriptions of a person's appearance on the example of the "Saga of Forsytes" by J. Galsworthy. The level of formation of lexical competence is understood as the ability of students to solve various communicative tasks based on the acquired knowledge and relevant skills of describing a person's appearance as a component of a psychological portrait.
