Forming the image of the enemy through the media in order to manipulate the public consciousness

The psyche of a person with a developed emotional sphere is easily subjected to manipulative influences. The main task is to actualize a special hostile attitude towards the outgroup, and to form an idea of the threat emanating from it. This article examines the historical prerequisites for the division of society into "we-they", as well as the mechanisms of forming the image of the "enemy" on the basis of self-identification. The author examines the possibilities of media participation in the formation of stereotypes and the image of the outgroup due to the authority, in particular, considers a number of studies on the topic based on the study of media broadcast messages after the 9/11 terrorist acts. The emphasis is placed on the specifics of the role of the media in the conditions of information confrontation.
