As a result of man's acquisition of the surrounding reality, a system of signs of the material and spiritual worlds arises, endowing them with certain cultural meanings as a set of cultural codes covering different spheres of life. Information about symbols, values and norms of an ethnic group is hidden in cultural codes. The specific meaning of the units of the cultural code is not identical to the common language usage. This is a special type of connotative meaning in which culturally significant information is accumulated. It influences the thinking, feelings and behavior of the native speakers. The objects of the world around us, in addition to performing their direct functions, carry some additional meanings. The units that make up the codes of culture (animals, sea, mountain, forest, temple, door, etc.) are endowed with certain cultural meanings, some of which are used consciously by native speakers, while others are explicated as a result of linguocultural analysis. The article analyzes the correlations of the figurative and symbolic meanings of a tree in culture and within the framework of the linguocultural approach examines the features of such a unit of the natural landscape code of German linguistic culture as «Baum». The main purpose of this article is to identify and describe the cultural meanings of this unit as a part of phraseological units and paremias. Phraseological units and paroemias are complex linguistic signs in which myths, symbols, traditions and rituals of a particular culture have «frozen» and still exist. The nature-landscape code of culture is understood as mental images connected with nature or landscape.
