Phrasal verbs with adverb «away» as markers of conceptual metaphors of time

The article deals with the variability of phrasal verbs with adverb «away» that serve as the markers of the cognitive metaphor «time is a valuable commodity», its value signified by the negative attitude towards its expenditure: «trifle away», «melt away», «sloth away», «linger away», «throw away», «loiter away», «give away», «fritter away», «muddle away», «fling away», «dally away», and the cognitive metaphor «time is a moving object», where presenting time as a burdensome period, which can be endured with the help of different activities: «discourse away», «wear away», «talk away», «toy away», «sleep away», «slumber away», «dance away», «write away», «idle away», «dawdle away», «saunter away», «while away», «wish away», «dream away», «doze away». The representation of the markers in the British linguoculture shows an example of the competition of language means in conveying culturally important meanings.
