The current situation in the field of international relations makes it possible to cover new areas of communication and has a significant impact on diplomatic discourse and diplomatic communication, causing new features to appear in it. Diplomatic discourse is becoming an increasingly public phenomenon, but at the same time continues to be an insufficiently studied phenomenon. The coverage of political events in the media opens up unprecedented opportunities for politicians to influence a wide audience. The impact can manifest itself both explicitly and implicitly and have a variety of forms. The linguistic forms of manifestation of such an impact represent the actualization of the category of causativity, that is, the intention to influence, change a person's condition or induce him to perform some action. This article examines the question of the functions of the inaugural address identified in the article by E. Truss dated September 18, 2021, published in "The Sunday Telegraph". The purpose of the article is to develop a methodology for analyzing the pragmatic functions of language tools used in diplomatic discourse. Up-to-date language material has been introduced into the work. The appeal to the issue of identifying and describing the functions of the inaugural address is associated with the increased attention of researchers to the analysis of modern discursive practices. The relevance of this research is due, on the one hand, to the growing interest of the mass reader and viewer in political events, which became possible due to the rapid growth of Internet communications, and, on the other hand, to the continuing interest in the problems of causativity at various levels, both in direct and indirect forms.
