This article analyzes the major functions performed by dressing up in a Russian historical novel of the twentieth century. Referring to the D. Merezhkovsky, A. Tolstoy, V. Shishkov and V. Pikul works, the author explores a number of episodes where a disguise motive plays an important cultural, political and psychological role.
