The novel of a contemporary English writer Gregory Norminton The Ship of Fools is considered in the context of ecphrasis poetics. Different functions of pictorial ecphrasis (narrative, compositional, parodical, meta-narrative etc.) are analysed. The poetics of Norminton's novel is researched in detail: the play with space and time, with biblical and literary allusions, with pictorial reminiscences of Bosch's and Bruegel's paintings, the carnival chronotopos, the structure "a story within a story" and others.
