Functional design as a direction of artistic project culture

The article systematizes the results of studies of functional design as a current of design activity from the XIX century to the present day. The development of design principles and methods of functionalism in the historical context, as well as in the conditions of modern art and design culture is studied. The socio cultural conditions in which this direction of art and design activity existed are considered. The critical point of view in relation to functional design is also analyzed. The relationship between technology, craft and art in the context of functional design is highlighted. Particular attention is paid to the social and humanistic components of this direction of art and design culture, the underlying design ideas dating back to the Bauhaus and VKhUTEMAS, in a transformed form they survived to this day and are used in digital technology.
