Introduction: this article presents the results of a study of the functioning of mechanisms for compensation for damage caused by a crime in states with different legal systems. The emphasis is placed on the analysis of legal problems of compensation for harm to victims of crimes abroad. Materials and Methods: the theoretical basis of the study was the work of domestic lawyers studying compensation for criminal damage. The methodological basis of the study was the methods of analysis, synthesis, comparison, in addition, a number of English-language and domestic sources were processed by the content analysis method. The empirical basis of the study was the analysis of foreign legal norms on compensation for damage caused by a crime. Results: in the process of studying the institute of compensation for criminal damage to victims of crime in certain foreign countries, the author came to the conclusion that in the states of the Romano-German and Anglo-Saxon legal system, this institution is one of the most developed. Discussion and Conclusions: the legal protection of victims of crime in the Russian Federation is paid less attention than in foreign countries. The positive foreign experience of the institute of victims' rights is a necessary foundation for its development in the modern Russian theory of law and legislation.
