The complex of stages and operations to change the shape of the material with using of all kinds of tools with cutting edges is the process of woodcarving. The woodworkers used the certain tool composition (kit) for the production of each kind of wooden items. Many types of these tools were universal, as might be used for several operations. Researchers educed the first specialized kits, consisted of tenth of woodworking tools for primary and secondary treatment during the analysis of stone tool complexes, originating from the Neolithic settlements of the Urals. They found that “rough ” - primary - treatment of wood people had used the axes, chisels, scrapers, saws (apparently, the blades with denticulate edges). The secondary treatment: “production of the clean finishing and engraving works” - was made by rabot scraper, planer knives, drills, reamers, cutters, burins. Such a wide range of tools permitted to estimate the development level of the Neolithic woodcarving and reconstruct the main operations of the primary (fell, rough hewing) and secondary (rough planing, scraping-abrasion, finish planing, smoothing and polishing, carving and engraving) treatment of wood surface. The efforts of our predecessors, the results of the use-wear analysis of wooden items with traces of treatment by tools, data, received in the process of ethnographic observations and experimental works, permitted to establish that the ancient masters of North and Central Asia used such types of woodcarving tools as chopping, percussion, with complex functions, cutting and their varieties. Similar to modern masters, the woodworkers of Xiongnu-Sarmatian time produced the wallet-storage for tools.
