Generation of slow magnetosonic oscillations by solar terminator in the Earth’s plasmasphere

We suggest the solution to the problem of the structure and spectrum of slow magnetosonic (SMS) waves in the Earth’s plasmasphere with realistic distribution of plasma parameters along geomagnetic field lines. We found both the analytical solution to the problem in the WKB approximation and its numerical solution. Calculation data were compared with observations. The findings allow us to interprete the total electron content variations recorded above Japan as oscillations of one of the main harmonics of standing SMS waves. The main components of the standing SMS wave field registered near the ionosphere are plasma density and pressure variations. Ground-based observations fail to register magnetic field variations related to SMS oscillations.
