The article discusses the historiography of the genesis of “autocracy” as a phenomenon in Russia. In the modern context, there is an increasing interest in understanding the historical path and practices of public administration in Russia. It is therefore important to understand autocracy as a state-legal institution that has been a part of Russian statehood for over three centuries. Based on the results of the research, the article concludes that there is a need for a comprehensive theory that describes the genesis of autocracy in a broader socio-cultural context. While many aspects of this topic have been studied by scholars in the past, there is still a need to re-examine some established ideas considering current historical and legal research. This includes questions about the periodization of autocracy's emergence, its nature, and its historical trajectory. The author has developed a typology of the factors that contribute to the emergence of autocracy, based on historical research. This article raises several important questions and opens new avenues for discussion about the origins of autocratic systems.
