Genius and madness in the culture of romanticism

The article considers genius and madness as metahistorical categories of culture. Each historical type of culture interprets these concepts in its own way and in certain respects. The author focuses on the European culture of Romanticism updating the topic of interaction between the categories of "genius" and "madness". The paper traces a correlation between psychiatric knowledge and interpretations of madness in the art culture of the time. Studying the works by Hoffmann and Coleridge, the author describes the transformation of the furor poeticus in the Romanticism culture.
