The 26S proteasome consists of 33 separate subunits, each of which is encoded by different genes. Recently, much attention has been paid to the PSMA6 gene, which encodes the type 6 proteasome alpha subunit. Given the large number of subunits and the importance of the proteasome in protein degradation and processing, as well as the rapid rate of detection of proteasome polymorphisms associated with human diseases, we must take into account this genetic information and use it for clinical benefit.
