The article reviews ideas of the English thinker Herbert Spencer who enlarged and systematized Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s concept of natural consequences. Presented is the analysis of various attitudes to the importance of this method at different development stages of pedagogical thought both in Russia and abroad.
