The Global Spread of E-learning-only Universities

This article provides an overview of the global spread of open distance learning universities. Examples of leading specialized distance learning universities are examined, including their scale, educational programs, budgets, research activities, and social impact. The geographic and sociocultural diversity of distance and blended learning models across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas is described. A gradual increase in trust in open distance learning universities and their competitiveness is noted, driven by technological advances and changing student and employer attitudes. A conclusion is drawn regarding the advantages of distance learning models in terms of cost-eff ectiveness, as well as the growing infl uence of open and distance education on shaping the global educational environment.
