The article presents the biographies of 6 directors of Buryat-Mongolian State Pedagogical Institute. The comparative analysis of the biographies gives data on their age, gender, place of birth, education, specialist field and other aspects. We have made an attempt to consider an important period in the lives of the directors - the years of Civil War (1918-1922). That was the most tragic page in the history of our country. The confrontation between the White movement and the Red Army, policy of war communism, military intervention and insurgency of rebel groups took a tragic toll on the lives of the people of that era. We have emphasized that there is a lack of information on the life and activities of the directors of Buryat-Mongolian State Pedagogical Institute during the Civil War of 1918-1922 in their official biographies, and identified a number of factors that directly influenced this situation. For the directors 1918-1922 was a period of personal becoming, development of values and spirituality. These years fell on their childhood, adolescence and youth; in this turbulent era, their characters and resistance to external adversity were strengthened. It seems likely that in subsequent years information about that time was deliberately suppressed for reasons of precaution and security. We come to the conclusion that the directors, despite the difficulties, were able to achieve high results as organizers and scientists. To complete the picture, the article describes the war events in the native settlements of the future directors. It is important to note that 5 directors were from Irkutsk Governorate, and 1 - from Chita Oblast. In this regard, we have analyzed the Civil War years in these regions. The study of personality development in the tragic period of the 20th century is an up-to-date trend in research in the form of historical anthropology.
