This article deals with the place of urban walls in the imagined space of English cities in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The author clarifies the role played by city walls in the imagination of English late medieval burgher, drawing from narrative and literary sources. The wall symbolized the liberties and freedom of the city, ensured its safety and set a visual border between the city and the countryside. The author concludes that in the 14-15th centuries the city walls still retained their symbolic value, though the first signs of their desacralization can be traced.
