State Far Eastern Institute of Education (Vladivostok): a reconstructed chapter in the history of the regional higher education system (1921-1923)

The study describes the backgrounds to the first institute of education in the Russian Far East established in Vladivostok in 1921 at the discretion of the local community. The historical environment and prerequisites for its creation are analyzed, the information on preceding Vladivostok Teachers’ Training Institute (1917-1920) is provided. Based on the archives, the author discusses the transformation of teachers’ training institute into institute of education, i.e. a new-type educational institution. The research identifies the challenges met by the Institute during its establishment, examines its structure, the number of students, the faculty. The Institute was restructured into Education Department of State Far Eastern University (in January 1923) as a part of the reform implemented in relation to the regional higher education system in the aftermath of the Civil War followed by the Sovietization of the Far East.
