The lexical and grammatical categories of the number are considered. The general rules for determining the grammatical number of a noun and the rules for determining the grammatical formality of words are described. We consider words that have only the singular form (singularia tantum) or only the pluralia tantum (pluralia tantum). The relationship between the grammatical number and the number is estimated.
