The article deals with the screen versions of L. Andreev’s famous story "Governor", in which the cinema language differs and two epoches are reflected from different viewpoints. “The White Eagle” (1928) as an agitational film is far from the original idea of Andreev’s story. The creators of “The Governor” (1991), conversely, have followed it very close and tried to catch the simularity of two centuries despite a big time gap between the text and this movie. If in a silent film which deformates the original content and stylistics the inventions of modernism have been taken into accout, the latest movie adoptes only socio-psychological level of the story and remains within the framework of realistic poetics.
