Relevance of the study of depressive disorders and depression-like conditions is determined by the high prevalence of these disorders in all age groups and the increasing impact of depressive disorders on the level of social functioning and quality of life of society. The findings of biological studies on affective pathology are very ambiguous and relate to the research on various aspects of the functioning of homeostatic systems. Changes in the functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system and the sympathoadrenal system that accompany depressive disorders are due to the physiological functioning these systems as mediators of the body's response to stressors.
