The paper describes the existing industrial enterprises used motivational mechanisms, given their brief characteristics. It is revealed that the evolution of motivational concepts includes four stages of development. A set of measures aimed at encouraging and punishing staff in the early twentieth century was a sufficiently effective method of managing employees due to the high level of unemployment, low skill level of staff, poor living conditions of employees, due to the minimum wage. To date, motivational mechanisms have evolved and undergone significant changes. Initially, such scientists as F. Taylor, E. Moeyo, A. Maslow, D. McClelland, F. Herzberg, D. Adams, A.N. Leontiev, A.G. Zdravomyslov, V.N. Rozhin, I.F. Belyaeva, I.N. Gerchikova, A.Y. Kibanov and others contributed to the development of motivational mechanisms. As a modern motivational mechanism the approach which allows to estimate level of motivation of the personnel, based on such indicators as social and labor activity of employees, motives of social action and Executive activity of employees is considered. There are three types of requirements: holistic, practical and neutral. Motivation is considered as a three-component element that includes employee values, work requirements and implementation of these requirements.
