Intellectual legacy of Max Horkheimer, a German philosopher and sociologist famous for his work in critical theory as a member of the 'Frankfurt School', is still an ill-studied piece of world philosophical texts. Undoubtedly, the critical theory by M. Horkheimer demands further research that would make possible its use in modern studies. The purpose of this paper is to trace how this theory was interpreted and comprehended in different periods of history.
