The Artistic and Epic Originality of the Historical Novel by Aidarbek Sarmanbetov “The Stars Are Burning on Earth”

This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the artistic and epic nature of Aidarbek Sarmanbetov’s historical–lyrical novel “Stars Ignite on Earth.” The novel vividly portrays the sociopolitical landscape of the second half of the nineteenth century, a period marked by intensified Russian and Chinese colonial pressure that significantly impacted the destiny of the Kyrgyz people. Through the depiction of real historical figures such as Nurdoelet batyr and Burulcha suluu, the author conveys themes of national values, the pursuit of freedom, moral–spiritual consciousness, and collective memory. The narrative blends documentary precision with lyrical expression, dramatic tension, and psychological depth, enabling readers to immerse themselves fully in the era described. Sarmanbetov’s skillful use of historical detail and narrative structure constructs a cohesive epic framework in which character destinies are interwoven with broader historical processes. The novel reinterprets fundamental concepts of national identity—unity, bravery, sacrifice, and justice—while offering a philosophical and aesthetic reflection on the turbulent periods of Kyrgyz history. The analysis demonstrates that “Stars Ignite on Earth” represents a significant contribution to the development of the Kyrgyz historical novel, enriching the literary tradition with a nuanced portrayal of cultural memory and heroic legacy. Accordingly, the work stands as an important text that expands the methodological and thematic horizons of contemporary Kyrgyz literature.
