The article studies the main themes of «The War Diary» of Herbert Read (1893-1968), a well-known English art scholar, poet and philosopher. This historical document of the I World War was first published in full in 1962, and it has never been the object of analysis by the Russian literary scholars or historians. The speaker proposes that the idea of an individual revolt against the mass forms of association, which is aired in «The War Diary», expresses the ethical position of Herbert Read as it shaped itself during the three-year war period. The article traces the development of this idea in the war diary notes highlighting the connections with the other issues which Read discusses en passage the war developments.
