In the 20th century, ideology played an important role in the emergence and spread of social movements. This article considers how the weakening of the ideological confrontation associated with the end of World War II affected social movements in France. It is noted that with the dominance of one or another ideology, be it social democracy or neoliberalism, French society has faced with vivid forms of public protest actions and movements. Nowadays, despite the general decline of faith in any ideology and the spread of populism in politics, social movements do not cease to exist, while either keeping a distance from politics at the cost of possible political influence, or creating their own platforms for political participation and civic initiatives.
