The article considers the problem of significance of the author and his interaction with the reader and the character in the paradigm of modernistic and post-modernist play poetics of V. Nabokov. The reader is a partner in the aesthetic game of the writer, and he must guess an authorial concept, or interpret it. The character obeys the author and has no personal content. The writer of the dehumanized era, when massive arts takes on special significance, obeys the latter’s dictate and acts as Creator and a clown-actor with functions of a priest. A masked presence in the work of literature is typical for Nabokov, but in this way he rises above the world satisfying his Super Ego.
