The article deals with lexical-semantic analysis of proper names used for denoting sport terms on the material of English and German languages. The author analyzes the terms of such sports as: skeet shooting, archery, wrestling, heavy athletics and track-and-field athletics, provides their topic classification. For proper understanding and use of sport terms with a proper name component, the author analyzes their etymology. The author defines the following concepts: proper name, anthroponym, toponym. As a result of lexical-semantic analysis, the author comes to the conclusion that the subgroups "Skeet shooting", "Archery" and "Wrestling" comprise sport terms with a toponym as a component that reflect geographical names of those localities, cities and countries where they were invented and convey various kinds of information through ages. The subgroups "Weightlifting" and "Track-and-field athletics" include sport terms with an anthroponym that contain information about authors connected with the designated phenomena, concepts and elements of physical training, perpetuate their names, transmit historical memory of generations. The results of the research are intended for the compilation of mono- and bilingual onomastic dictionaries and contribute to the development of English and German onomastics.
