Implicit Semantics in Text: Evidence from Forensic Linguistics

Бесплатный доступ

The article discusses the phenomena of implicit semantics that are important for research in the field of forensic linguistics. In the procedure of semantic analysis of implicit semantics, it is suggested to distinguish between obligatory and optional components of meaning. Obligatory meanings are necessary for correct understanding of the semantics of the text. Such parts of sense facet ensure the semantic coherence of the text and the absence of contradictions in it. Optional phenomena of implicit semantics are not compulsory for correct understanding. The text remains semantically coherent and consistent, even if the addressee has not identified any optional interpretations of its content. Explicitness and implicitness are communicative statuses that are inherent for certain semantic components of the text. The results of the study presented in the article indicate the need for in-depth research into the phenomena of implicit semantics of speech forms from the standpoint of addressee's obligatory identification of meanings, which form the basis of the semantics of the text – its coherence and meaningfulness. Another important dimension of implicit semantics is the possibility of reliable verbalization of the revealed phenomena of the sense facet. Obligation and verbalization of meaning form two relatively independent properties of the implicit semantics of speech forms. The explicit and the implicit do not form a contradictory opposition. The interaction between them requires further study.
