There is such a terrible tale that scares babies, that is, beginners to learn a foreign language. This is a language barrier. It is offered to us either to overcome, or to cross at all courses of a foreign language, in any case, as their advertisements say.

The language barrier is the inability to communicate in a foreign language or difficult communication in a foreign language. And everyone who begins to learn a foreign language faces it. Especially students who study non-pedagogical universities.

There are two types of reasons - objective and subjective. Understanding the written text, listening to the oral is a passive knowledge of the language. But writing and speaking are already our own generation of foreign designs. And when students have time to think in written language, this time is minimized during communication. Hence the first problems, since the student does not yet have speaking skills, he does not have time to quickly extract the necessary phrases, in addition, he may simply not have enough vocabulary.

It’s easy here - to learn the language. Learn new words, new grammar, consolidate it all in oral speech. Talk, talk, talk, as much as possible, as often as possible. We remember that “Practice makes perfect”. Start talking. To get started, just try to express the meaning of the phrase with the means available to you so that the meaning is clear to the interlocutor, not particularly worried about the form of the statement. As soon as you feel more comfortable, you will be able to follow how you speak. If possible, make sure your speech is correct. If you are studying with a teacher, he will pay attention to your mistakes, but it will also be a good idea to record your spontaneous speech on the recorder and later listen for errors. Select a topic, start recording and start talking, later listen and analyze errors.

There are useful fixed expressions in the English language, having learned which, you can feel much freer. For example, “Could you tell me the way to the nearest station / bank etc. Let me introduce ... I would like to order... «This applies not only to the Elementary level. Where to get it: every English textbook (at least British-made) has a section with useful phrases for each level (in Cutting Edge it is a “useful language»). There are also online resources where you can find useful phrases dedicated to a particular topic.

Useful phrases for dating at the Elementary level

Greeting:

Hello! — Здравствуйте!

Hi! — Привет!

Hi! How are you? — Привет! Как дела?

Hi! What's up? — Привет! Как жизнь? (сленг)

Hi! How's it going? — Привет! Как дела? (разг.)

How goes it? — Как дела?

What is the news? — Что нового?

Good morning. — Доброе утро.

Good afternoon. — Добрый день.

Good evening. — Добрый вечер.

Possible answers to the greeting:

Very well, thank you. / I am all right, thank you. — Спасибо, очень хорошо.

I am fine, thanks. — Я в порядке, спасибо.

Never better. — Как никогда лучше.

So-so. — Так себе.

Acquaintance:

What's your name? — Как тебя зовут?

What's his nickname? — Какое у него прозвище?

Who are you? — Кто ты?

My name is... / I am... — Меня зовут...

My friends call me... — Друзья называют меня...

You can call me... — Можешь называть меня...

How do you spell your name? — Как пишется ваше имя?

Students are talking, they have some stock of fixed phrases. What next? Expand words knowledge. Try to use new words in speech, communicate on those topics with which they are associated. Work with synonymy - instead of simple words and phrases, use more complex ones, for example, instead of “good” - “great, well, superb, awesome, terrific” etc., instead of “bad” -“terrible, awful, lousy, horrid” etc .

Students should pay attention to the proper use and meaning of words. For example, the difference between “suggest” and “offer”, “job” and “work”. Keep an eye on the style and try to stick to it. There are a number of words that are used exclusively in “Formal English” (see Notes in the dictionary), for example: “nevertheless”, “to disclose”, “to constitute”, “to undertake”, “daunting”,

“impervious”, “ anew ”,“ truly ”,“ solace ”,“ to enchant ”,“ frantically ”,“ sizeable ”,“ to clutch ”,“ heyday ”,“ as it happens ”,“ upsurge ”,“ retrieval ”.

In addition, phrasal verbs are practically not used, speech, in general, does not allow waste from the canon. There are also a number of words that are used only in Informal English: “dude”, “freaking”, “uh-huh”, “nope” (= “no”), “to puke”, “trashy”, “grownup” , “Awesome”, “to chill out”, “stuff”, “hard-up”, “to tick somebody off”, “to sell like crazy”.

In addition, phrasal verbs are often used - “found out” instead of “discovered”, “came across” instead of “encountered”, “got away” instead of “escaped”.

Daily phrases:

Here you are. / There you go. — when giving something to someone.

Excuse me? / Come again? — to ask someone to repeat something.

What do you mean? — to ask for explanation.

So, you’re saying that...? — to ask for сonfirmation.

Exactly! / I couldn’t agree with you more. — to agree with someone.

By the way... / Anyway... — to change the topic.

See you. Take care. — to say goodbye.

In addition to absolutely objective reasons, factors and subjective, certain properties of character play a role here - shyness, fear of making a mistake, selfdoubt.

The more students communicate, the more they improve! In the words of T. Roosevelt, "he who never does anything is never mistaken." Without making mistakes, it is impossible to learn anything; making mistakes is the normal process of learning a foreign language. This should be remembered as an axiom, repeated every day at night and, thus, get rid of the fear of speaking.
