The article is devoted to the development of the national system of higher vocational education in India in the 1990s. The needs of the socio-economic development of the Republic made it necessary to revise the priorities and the major vectors of the development of the higher education. The quantitative and qualitative changes fostered the innovative processes in Indian universities and enhanced their status in the world rankings.
