One of the striking phenomena of the modern era has been the emergence of a large number of socially-oriented non-profit organizations (SONPO) providing services to the population associated with improving the quality of life of citizens in need of social assistance, which requires scientific development of various aspects of their activities. It is necessary to correlate the current state of SONPO with their history, as well as to analyze the positive and negative aspects of their functional activity. The study of this problem is conducted within the framework of an institutional approach, a number of concepts (the theory of public goods, the theory of failures of the market and the state, the theory of contracts) reflecting the history of the emergence of socially oriented non-profit organizations. The result of the author’s scientific research is the conclusion that the process of institutionalization of non-profit organizations is not complete, and it is hardly worth talking about its final stage, given the constant transformation of modern society. Today it is necessary to evaluate the results of SONPO’s activities in relation to their goals and objectives facing them in the conditions of modern society.
