In the Buddhist tradition, there were two types of reincarnation: reincarnation owing to the saved-up karmic blessings and reincarnation as a result of compassionate motivation to all living beings. As a result, due to the first version the newly born creature in the higher or lower worlds continuously rotates in the wheel of life, engaging in virtuous practices in everyday life. The second version implies a choice of the place and time of birth. In the article on material of the Mongolian people, the institute of reincarnation, which is historically involved in political structure of the Mongolian society and still presents at Buddhist practices of Mongolian people is considered. The author describes the history of nine reincarnations of Taranatha - the Indian Buddhist teacher well known among Mongolian people as Dzhebzun-Damba Hutuhta or Bogdo-Gegen.
