Introduction: the article discusses various approaches to understanding the internal content of labor activity, identifies contradictions in the theoretical and applied analysis of unregistered and unrecorded labor relations, forms a hypothesis about the need for an integrative approach to understanding the essence of informal employment of the population. Materials and Methods: the work uses the method of system analysis and synergetic synthesis, as well as the formal-logical method of research using functional analysis. Results: the phenomenon of informal employment of the population is considered through the prism of various subject approaches, threats to the individual, society, state from informal employment are identified, the value and algorithm of an integral approach to the study of informal labor relations are determined. Discussion and Conclusions: the author of the article comes to the conclusion that a holistic understanding of the phenomenon of informal employment is possible only within the framework of an integrative approach with the identification of economic, social, psychological, etc. determinant.
