The article investigates the problem of intertextuality in the works of E. T. A. Hoffman. The game with well-known images and plots (“The relationship of things”, “Don Juan”) is one of the leading principles of his works. The unique technique of Hoffmann’s intertextuality is the creation of two interrelated fictional worlds (“Robbers”, “Elixirs of the devil”), when the text of an “alien” work permeates the consciousness of the characters and begins to control them, recreating a literary plot in the real world.
