The article is devoted to the architectural monument of federal importance, St. John the Theologian Cathedral, built in Saransk in the 17th century. Before 1991 the church was the second cathedral of the bishops of Penza and Saransk and the only functioning church in Saransk and its surroundings. With the formation of the independent Saransk and Mordovian diocese, the cathedral became a school for priestly service. Most of the today's clergymen of the Mordovian diocese passed through the temple's altar. After the opening of a new cathedral in honor of the righteous warrior St. Theodore Ushakov, the church retained its cathedral status.
