The article discusses the automated training systems (ATS) used for minimization of training length, which contributes to the intensification of education and improve its efficiency. The authors present a definition of the ATS, list their functions, describe typical benefits (dialogue nature, flexibility of learning place and time, possibility to use several programs simultaneously, etc.) and disadvantages (need for computer literacy, possibility of technical errors, unemotional communication with the ATS, and others). Tendencies of automated training systems development are also considered.
