Recently, in the Russian Federation, attention has been focused on the importance of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the educational process of foreign language teaching. However, the application of AI technologies is associated with certain difficulties as AI cannot completely replace a teacher, especially in the areas of interpersonal communication and text interpretation. The authors studied the problem of using AI in teaching foreign languages at non-linguistic universities with the aim of improving students' information and communication competence. The authors analyzed linguistic approaches to the use of artificial intelligence in teaching foreign languages at non-linguistic universities and evaluated the potential of automatic speech recognition. Special attention was paid to the analysis of linguistic approaches to the use of neural networks for modeling language learning. The authors determined the contribution of speech recognition technology to improving students' communicative skills; defined the concept of an educational metaverse; described its potential in teaching foreign languages by creating virtual spaces for students to interact with virtual teachers and with each other. The impact of speech recognition and processing technologies, as well as machine translation, on the development of language education and intercultural communication was discussed.
