Using IEEE and CIGRE test grids for studying electric power system operation modes

The paper considers approaches to using IEEE and CIGRE test grids as a tool for conducting scientific research of power systems. It reveals the difficulties in using basic test grids for various research tasks and possibilities for solving emerging problems. The analysis of the information contained in publicly available basic test grids showed that this information is insufficient for modern research tasks. In cases where missing information can be added locally and independently for each of the power system nodes, accounting for additional information in test models does not cause problems. If self-consistent data for all power system nodes is required, it is preferable to search for an IEEE test grid variant with the author's database optimal for the study or to use alternative databases and test grids. The paper reviews the repository containing the most complete database of publicly available test grids.
