The article contains an overview of the main concepts studying the problem of personal identification and self-identification from the perspective of social bases of the individual being. The paper focuses on the concept of personal identification of such well-known sociologists as E. Durkheim, C.H. Cooley, N. Luhmann, J. Habermas, P. Berger, T. Luckmann. A combined analysis of the theories under review makes it possible to emphasize the following social grounds for identity: belonging to professional communities, work attitudes, level of social activity, nationality. The individual implements identification in the process of socialization where the institution of education plays a priority role in the formation of identity. Thus, identity is a socially necessary quality of personality that enables it to adapt to society, deliberately undertake purposeful activity and initiate social transformations. The processes of identification are influenced by society; they can be controlled from outside and serve to harmonize public relations in many cases.
