Studies of cities and urbanization in contemporary sociology

The author focuses on modern sociological theory, first of all, the features of modern urban studies. In contemporary sociological urban studies, one can find both traditional topics (for example, inequality) and the new ones (for example, global cities). The author points out the diversity of approaches to understanding urbanization and highlights the main directions of urban studies. Particular attention is paid to the interdisciplinarity of the most urban studies, and sociological urban studies are not the exception. Collaboration of sociology with other social sciences in urban studies produces different interdisciplinary projects. Interdisciplinarity, on the one hand, produces some new knowledge, but, on the other hand, erases the boundaries of the sociology. It is noted that urban sociology is fragmented. Sociology loses its inner unity and turns into a collection of separate studies of urban space.
