Excavations in the north-western part of the Nerevsky end of medieval Novgorod in 2011 (Konyushenny-1 excavation trench)

In 2011 the Novgorod archaeological expedition of the Institute ofArchaeology, Russian Academy of Sciences, explored the Nerevsky End of medievalNovgorod. The area of the Konyushenny-1 excavation trench was 705 m2, and theoccupation layer was up to two meters deep. The excavations yielded a rich collectionof artifacts dating to the period when the city population began to exploit this part ofmedieval Novgorod and settle down there in the 10th-11th centuries as well as provided dataon topography and layout of urban mansions and distinctive features of their inhabitants’material culture in the 12th-15th centuries. Medieval mansion houses were enclosed by apalisade and abutted the pavement of Kholop’ya Street.
