Research project «Media as a language environment for native speakers of the Sami language»: experience of development and implementation

The research project «Media as a language environment for native speakers of the Sami language», implemented by teachers of the Department of Philology and Media Communications of the Murmansk Arctic State University, is presented. The purpose, objectives and main directions of the project, focused on supporting and popularizing the Saami language, one of the indigenous peoples of the Arctic, are revealed. The content and results of an oral survey of the Saami are described, during which the number of speakers of the Saami language was specified, the level of demand for it by speakers in everyday life was determined, and its place in the system of values of the respondents was characterized. The degree of support in learning the language from the Sami public and the language community was revealed. The conclusion is made about the expediency of creating a language media environment for the revitalization of the Sami language.
