The problem of students’ knowledge has been relevant for several centuries. This article discusses the origins of evaluation: how the marks were represented in the past of France and Russia. The author tracks the development of the assessment system and considers the modern teaching experience, its abilities. The article will be useful for current and future teachers trying to understand the origins of evaluation, attitude of outstanding figures of different times.
